Immersive Fallacy
The American game market demands an increasingly more convincing reality in games. The annual 2005 U.S. video game industry retail sales report by the NPD Group shows that half of the top ten games are sports simulations, about a third are Star Wars related, and the remaining two being Pokemon Emerald and Gran Turismo 4 (The Real Driving Simulator).
If American game designers are caught up in a desire for the game to duplicate reality, then game play innovation might be lost. But, as stated in Rules of Play, it might be interesting to explore double-consciousness of play.
